I would love to see some of those discussions on stackoverflow, but we'd probably need the original posters to take up that initiative by adding the original issue summary and then a response with the solution summary.

Using StackOverflow is a good idea. It will be much easy to get a glance of the problem on it rather than email.
Also, there are many interesting discussions in the mailing list. Are we planning to identify those and put it up on stack overflow too?

Cool - I'll wait to see what others might say and maybe do some general updates and announcements over the weekend.

I just don't want to discourage anyone from using this list to reach out either :)

So, for example, we'd encourage folks to refer to a question they have put up on stackoverflow which they'd like to bump some attention onto via an email within this list...

When people describe a full issue here we'd politely ask them to drop it into stackoverflow so it can be answered and later referred to by more people who experience the same issues, blockers or frustrations.

Identifying trends around common problems added to stackoverflow will also help us improve CKAN :)

Cheers,
Steven

I think that's a good idea. We have github for technical discussion among CKAN developers, so the dev list has become more of a general place to ask troubleshooting questions about CKAN. Sometimes they get unanswered. Stack Overflow incentivizes answering these a bit better, through magical internet points.

hi everyone,

This list has been quite active over the last few months with CKAN support questions that I suspect would give a lot of value to people if they were addressed in a more public technical forum such as here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/ckan

Stack overflow over the same period has probably received less attention as a result of the activity here (there are a few recent questions unanswered currently).

Related to this suggestion, I've recently setup an Asia-Pacific CKAN meetup that will run every two weeks. As we bring new people into the project I'd like to refer to the dev list as a good place for discussing core development and extension work while also encouraging people to monitor stack overflow for supporting users around general install, config, upgrade and troubleshooting issues.

Does this all sound reasonable? If so then I can update the CKAN.org website a little, write a blog post and generally help in directing questions into the best areas.

Cheers,
Steven
