This sounds really promising and is probably useful to other organizations as well! I also do not know any other extension doing the same job. So please go ahead and release it as an extension. :)

Hello,
We implemented for our HDX project (http://humdata.org) a way for user to request to be part of an organization via email. We have requests from our users to improve the way we are managing the requests with actions to accept/reject a reqest, delete, archive, etc.
Are you aware of something similar implemented or another extension?
