Hi everybody,

John from the California Digital Library is exploring the possibility of
setting up a CKAN mirror for data.gov, the US national Open Data portal, that
includes links to securely hosted copies of the data (see below).
If this is something that you might be interested on or that you could help
with please contact John to know more!

Cheers,

Adrià

Adria-

I have been working with Max Ogden on a project to back-up data.gov
metadata and the corresponding data files. We have done this and are now
looking to build a front-end CKAN instance to act as a mirror of dat.gov.
Of course, our instance would also include links to our backed-up copies of
data files.

I am hoping we can get some help with his effort. I am thinking this
includes:

1. Importing. Import the metadata from data.gov into a new instance of
CKAN. Maintaining the orgs, groups, etc. During import, we also want to
insert links to our back-up copies of the data files.
2. Sync. Find a way to keep the new instance and data.gov in sync. This
would be more than an auto-sync. For example, if a federal dataset is
deleted, we would want our mirror to not delete our page. So, some
triaging of the updates would be needed.

Future work would include allowing folks to add additional pages to our
instance for datasets not currently listed in data.gov and offer a way of
sending data.gov updates…but thats later done the line.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
John
