[ckan-discuss] Investigation of CKAN and data set persistent identifiers on the interent

Hi Hilton,

To add to this: having DOI support in CKAN is *really, really* easy - the
issue here is that to actually turn on DOIs would require you to get
registered as a DOI issuer (if you are a coder think of this as analogous
to the disqus based comment support - that support is in CKAN but turning
on requires you to register with disqus and get your key).

The issue so far is not that it is at all difficult to have DOI support
into CKAN (we already have a cite setup if you want it) but finding a CKAN
user who has actually got registered as a DOI provider (usual route is via
DataCite coalition) and therefore can test it out.

We - as in Open Knowledge Foundation - actually had a long chat with
various DataCite providers about getting signed up so we could have DOIs
for datahub.io but cost was something of an issue in initial conversation
(we were quoted figures like 5k per year by a UK based DataCite member).

To summarize: if you want DOI support in CKAN that is *really* easy - so
easy, that if we actually had a real user for this I think we can guarantee
rapid implementation by someone in the community (I'll backstop that by
saying i'll even do it!). So if you want to see it happen please upvote the
relevant issue in the roadmap (see you already commenting)
