The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has begun its Sixth Assessment cycle. The Working Group II Technical Support Unit (WGII TSU), which provides the scientific, technical and organisational support of the activities and products of the Working Group focusing on the Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability of Climate Change, is employed through the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) in Bremen, Germany.

Graphics Officer in the Technical Support Unit

Background:

The Working Group II Technical Support Unit (WGII TSU) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is recruiting a Graphics Officer. The successful candidate will be employed through the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The place of employment will be in Bremen, Germany.

The IPCC WGII focuses on the Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability of Climate Change. The WGII TSU provides the scientific, technical and organisational support for activities and products of IPCC WGII including the WGII contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (WGII AR6). WGII TSU is also the logistical lead on the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC). IPCC assessments provide a scientific basis for governments at all levels to develop climate-related policies. IPCC assessments are written by international author teams of hundreds of scientists. Tasks:

•  work closely with the WGII Co-Chairs, the Heads of the TSU and Science, the Communications Officer as well as with Graphics Officers both at other IPCC Working Group TSUs and within the WGII TSU

•  collaborate with the IPCC Secretariat

•  enhance understanding and impact of the products of the IPCC WGII

•  support the production of SROCC and the WGII contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report from a visual communication and information design perspective

•  assist authors in the design and preparation of graphics for the products of the IPCC WGII

•  finalise graphics for the layout, printing and interactive presentation of the reports on the IPCC website

•  develop of additional design guidelines for WGII communication in line with the IPCC visual identity

•  create additional visual products for example for the website, social media, printed materials as well as public and stakeholder events 

•  develop new ways to showcase WGII findings for experts, non-specialists and stakeholders

Requirements: 

•  expertise and skill in information design using qualitative and quantitative data, demonstrated by a degree and/or several years of work experience

•  experience in the production of graphics for print, online and other media

•  experience in the production of interactive graphics or animations would be an asset

•  proficiency with graphics design software

•  demonstrated skills in visualization-related programming and data-handling tools would be an asset

•  capacity to understand and illustrate complex scientific concepts to non-specialist audiences

•  demonstrated high interest in climate sciences

•  fluency in written and spoken English

•  fluency in additional languages, especially German would be an asset

•  outstanding social skills and capability to interact with an international science community

•  high motivation and capability to work in a small international team

•  capacity to work efficiently and respect time constraints, high degree of stress-resistance

•  willingness to undertake international travel

•  experience working in climate science communication and/or a climate-related field would be desirable

•  familiarity with the processes and work of the IPCC would be an asset

The intended starting date for this position is 1 February 2019 and it is advertised subject to availability of funding. The position is limited for two years, with extension intended through the completion of the project, expected at about 3.5 years. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund) up to salary level 11. The place of employment will be Bremen.
