Not sure what is happening here but it may be that

(a) apache was simply rebooted while this was going on (because apache 
overloaded)
(b) apache terminated the thread for some reason (i now have a 
reasonably restrictive set up because the apache2 process kept getting 
overloaded due to bots and other stuff)

I'd just suggest trying to recommit (and trying to commit a smaller 
batch of files).

On a general note the server has been quite heavily loaded in recent 
times. We are now getting quite a lot of traffic ~ 150k hits a month 
plus and there are quite a lot of sometimes quite large files in various 
of the repositories ;0

We are looking to improve this situation though including migrating some 
unrelated stuff to other servers.
