Hi MyData-list,

Maybe you have heard about this before but there is a controversial
development in Västerås, Sweden about a system called IOPS collecting
citizen data for commercial purposes.

Read below for a machine translated version of the Swedish text you can
find furthest down:

"Hey DFRI <https://www.dfri.se/dfri/?lang=en>list!

Since spring 2014 a system installed in Västerås to
monitor the flow of people. It is now Bumbee Labs AB
contacted the "CityCollaboration" in Västerås (an organization of
entrepreneurs,
property owners and the city) and that installed their system IOPS.
Information on how people move in the center is of course valuable
details for city cartel members, but the large-scale and
systematic data collection poses an unreasonable
integrity abuse. There is no clear information about the city
Data collection is ongoing and the only way to avoid being tracked is
by turning off their wifi (which many think is difficult and
moreover is easy to forget).

Exactly how IOPS works is not known. We have emailed Bumbee Labsoch
asked but received no reply. Educated guesses, substantiated by
statements to the media, suggesting that the system uses so-called "wifi
probe requests. "There are signals that all cell phones periodically
sends out and IOPS probably sniff and then decides position. In
Probe requests are phone's MAC address with, which is a global
unique identifier for the device. Probe requests also contains
name (SSID) of the network that the phone was previously connected to;
a combination of names that also serves as a fingerprint. There is
therefore no question of any "anonymous radio signal" that BumbeeLabs
argue in
its press materials.

The current setup is used for the evaluation of the system. under
November will "CityCollaboration" decide to buy the system or
not. Therefore, DFRI are to conduct a campaign against the system in the
early
November. We will be on site in Västerås to distribute leaflets
and create awareness about the system. The press will be invited and
hopefully this can put pressure on CitySamverkan to notgo
forward with a purchase. To arouse interest and attention, we
also use a DFRI-invention of technical means put
system out of action during the campaign.

To learn more or to participate in the campaign? Contact time action's
Coordinator Anders <anders at 4zm.org> for more practical details.

regards,
Anders"

Hej DFRI-listan!

namnen (SSID) på de nätverk som telefonen tidigare varit ansluten till;

Under
systemet ur spel under aktionen.

Vill du veta mer eller delta i aktionen? Kontakta då aktionens
samordnare Anders <anders at 4zm.org> för mer praktiska detaljer.

Hälsningar,
Anders
