No, wait. Let's get 'not' physical. Let's do some online discussion instead.
Open Knowledge Australia and Open Knowledge Brazil are two of the local
chapters in a pilot for discussing local topics via the new and improved
discuss.okfn.org area.
Take a look here: https://discuss.okfn.org/c/local-groups/okau
Both Stephen Gates and myself have been getting more involved in the new
discussion area (although to be honest I'm just following his leadership).
I've been using the discussion area more and more over the last few weeks
and I do like it.
This email list is also awesome so there is no competition. There are just
options.
So, anyhooo... it would be very cool to see people from this list consider
joining the discussion in the global OKFN area. When the voices are many
the message amplified. The OKFN list represents an opportunity to act
local, discuss local, but join with the discourse that is very much a
global movement. As we head into 2016 and consider hosting an Open
Knowledge Festival for the entire APAC region it would be great to expand
our influence as an open knowledge chapter and get more involved in the
projects and topics that others around the globe are also investing in.
There is a diversity in numbers, which creates a strength. While here in
Australia we can become preoccupied with the struggles related to having a
conservative federal Government, I do believe that these are just temporary
struggles. There is a global discussion surrounding open knowledge which is
fundamental to the movement and we risk becoming isolated from this
discussion if most of our focus remains local.
And, aside from this I'm so incredibly proud of what we are achieving here
that I can't help thinking we should be promoting out success and helping
other regions learn from our success.
We are, most certainly, a lucky country. I believe we have a responsibility
to support those who don't share our natural endowment of luck.
Hoots!
Steven
