I was thinking about this while helping out with ANU's new TechLauncher 
initiative, where students work on an IT project, with the option of 
turning it into a product. This uses some of the hackathon techniques, 
but extended over a year. These are a much more diverse range of 
students than the usual university IT geeks and it is interesting
