Total agreement here. I've just about finished an complete rewrite of 
ckan from the ground up (dubbed ckan2) and it is just about deployable 
so I plan to put an alpha site at test.ckan.net asap. For those 
interested the current codebase can be found at:

It is. 8000 signatures in just under a year and more publicity then
INSPIRE got in its previous X years and all with a few volunteers doing
the occasional bit of work!
