I don't know why, but I think this story about NYC making data about  
rat colonies in the boroughs is pretty cool:

I don't have any skills with data manipulation/visualization, but I  
can imagine that you could come up with some pretty cool stuff.   
Hopefully they have it under an open licence (or will do).
