Have a look at section 5 in http://cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/Leisch-CreatingPackages.pdf Looks quite reasonable to me as a distribution format, and may be more appropriate than setup.py / ini based metadata? Also, the ability to use the data in R straight off seems a big plus to me. James
