WORKING WITH LINKED DATA & GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Workshop and Tutorial

University of Portsmouth 26th April 2011

The Linked Data Web is a rapidly growing part of the Web that enables data
to be published and interlinked in much the same way as web pages are
currently published and linked. Linked Data is increasingly being used to
publish Geographic
Information including Geonames, OpenStreetMap (as OpenGeoData) and Ordnance
Survey data. The current administrations in the UK and US are actively
encouraging
government departments and agencies to publish their data as Linked
Data. The value and advantages of Linked Data are also being recognised
within the scientific community and the cultural heritage sector, with an
increasing number of catalogues being exposed as Linked Data.

For those working with geographic information Linked Data will become
increasingly
important. Producers of GI need to understand how to organise, describe and
publish Linked Data; those wishing to use GI need to understand how to
search
for and consume Linked Data. This workshop and tutorial is designed to
raise
awareness and understanding of Linked Data, and to expand the community of
practitioners, enable sharing of knowledge and thus to accelerate the use
of
Linked Data.

THE TUTORIAL WILL PROVIDE:

* An overview of Linked Data;

* Describe the potential advantages;

* Present worked through examples;

* Enable current publishers and users to describe their experience.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

others.

* Anyone who needs to know about Linked Data, especially as applied to
gazetteers and other forms of geographical information.
