[OKFN-FR] Développer Open Food Facts dans d'autres langues et pays grâce à OKFN

Bonjour,

Tout d'abord un grand merci à Pierre, Samuel et les autres membres 
d'OKFN-FR pour l'organisation de l'Open Data Day à Paris.

Lors de ma présentation d'Open Food Facts hier, j'ai évoqué le fait 
qu'on avait du mal à recruter des contributeurs non-francophones pour 
développer les versions internationales. On a une dizaine de langues 
plus ou moins traduites, mais très peu de produits : les stats sont sur 
la page http://openfoodfacts.org

Cela serait fantastique si l'on pouvait utiliser le réseau global d'OKFN 
pour trouver des personnes pour nous aider à développer et faire 
connaître le projet dans d'autres pays.

Un besoin très concret à court terme : le G-8 organise fin avril à 
Washington une conférence sur l'Open Data pour l'Agriculture et la 
Sécurité Alimentaire, et il y a un appel aux présentations ouvert:

On va répondre à cet appel pour essayer d'y présenter notre projet, mais 
si on est sélectionnés, ce n'est pas certain que l'un d'entre nous 
puisse faire le voyage. Mais peut-être que l'on pourrait trouver une 
personne qui habite dans la région de Washington qui serait prêt à 
présenter le projet pour nous. Et bien sûr on pourrait faire la même 
chose pour d'autres projets : si on va a Genève, on pourrait y 
représenter des projets qui ne peuvent pas envoyer de représentants.

Samuel a également suggéré qu'on pourrait créer un working group OKFN 
sur l'alimentation.

Quel serait le meilleur moyen d'avancer sur ces sujets ? Je vais mettre 
ci-dessous une version en anglais de ce que je viens d'écrire, pour que 
vous puissiez par exemple la transmettre aux personnes et/ou aux listes 
adéquates (celle d'open-sustainability ?).

Hello,

I presented the Open Food Facts project yesterday at the Open Data Day 
event organized by the French local group of OKFN in Paris. We are 
creating a kind of "Wikipedia" for food products: a crowdsourced 
database of food products from around the world with ingredients, 
nutrition facts, labels etc. published under the Open Database Licence. 
We started in May 2011 and the project took off very quickly, with 300 
contributors adding 5000 products. But so far we have not been very 
successful at developing other languages than French (Spanish being the 
exception). We have versions more or less translated in 10 languages, 
but very few products. You can see the number of products for each 
language on http://openfoodfacts.org

We would be very interested to find people who could help us to develop 
the project and make it known in other countries. The OKFN's network 
could certainly be of great help to find interested persons.

We also have a very concrete short term need: the G-8 is organizing on 
April 29th a conference on Open Data for Agriculture and Food Security. 
There is an open call for ideas:

We will answer that call to try to present our project, but if we are 
selected, we may not be able to fly from France to Washington. But we 
were thinking that we may be able to find someone living close to 
Washington who could present the project. And of course we would be more 
than happy to return the favor and present some projects from abroad at 
conferences in Paris or other conferences we may go to elsewhere.

Any comments or suggestions welcome!

At the Open Data Day event in Paris, it was also suggested that we could 
start an OKFN working group related to food. I do not know what is the 
right process to suggest new working groups, but we would certainly be 
very interested in participating in and starting such a working group.
