[open-data-day] Patting yourself on the back, sharing stories & an apology

Hi everyone,

David Eaves here. Open data day is a very decentralized event, with really
all the work laying in the hands of local organizers who find the space,
rally people and try to make the day as fun as possible. We don't have
much, if any organization, no boss and no central authority who is going to
say thank you. But I'm hoping that each of you will say congratulations and
thank you to one another. I know I'm intensely grateful to see that there
are so many others out there that care about this issue, that want to
connect, learn, meet new people, have fun and, of course, make things(!).
So from me at least, thank you to everyone who is on this list for
participating, caring and helping grow this event.

Second, I'd really like to write a blog post (I can imagine other would to)
about some of the projects people worked on, whether they got completed or
not. If everyone who is on this list shared at least one (maybe the
coolest) project they saw at their hackathon, that would be a great way to
share stories and learn from one another. Another great thing to do would
be to add some description to the 2012 open data day projects
page<http://www.opendataday.org/wiki/Opendata_Day_2011_Projects>.
At the very minimum though, please do email stuff around to this group so
we can learn from one another.

Finally, some of you may have noticed I became conspicuously absent on the
day. I want to apologize to everyone. My partner went into labour on
Friday night and so by early morning Saturday it was obvious that my open
data day was going to be spent with her. Our baby was 11 days over due so
we really thought that we'd be in the clear by Dec 3rd... but our baby had
other plans. The good news is while the labour did last 35 hours and there
were some tough moment, baby and boy are doing well!

I can't wait to loop back with people - and please, do send around
descriptions of your favourite projects.

Best,
David
