Hey all,

*A quick note to update you on some exciting plans that members of this
list have been working on... (http://j.mp/yxswak)*

Back in 2010 the open-development group was involved in organising the Aid
Information Challenge hack-day to work with the then-available aid projects
data and show it's potential for analysis, mash-ups and creating things.
The main Aid Information Challenge event took place in London.

Now in 2012, there's lots more aid data, and data on development projects
in countries, becoming available, from IATI (www.iatiregistry.org) and
other sources, and so a few of us thought it might be interesting to
revisit the hack-day idea and organise a 2012 challenge. Mark Brough
convened a meeting a few weeks back, and the result was a proposal to
launch a 2012 'Development Information Challenge on Aid and Development
Projects' to include:

   - A call for questions and ideas on working with aid and development
   project data in April;
   - A series of 'dev days' (hack-days, but framed as accessible to
non-techies too) during May where small teams can work on projects around
the questions and ideas gathered; we've definitely got plans for a London
day secure, but hoping also that dev days could take place in other places
   around the world.
   - Some sort of judging/celebration of the results of the dev days in
   June.

To goal is to really explore what can be done now with the growing
availability of open data and information on aid and development projects,
both at the global (e.g. IATI), and the local (e.g. Community Development
Funds; country or regional budgets) level.

More in this document here where ideas are being explored:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1P7mXtghyI72ae5QT66gxCdTr7az_UIJYf58lsmbE4RI/editand
where you can put down your name to be involved in planning.

Mark (mark.brough at publishwhatyoufund.org) is working on plans, prep and a
website for the project now - but I'm sure would welcome offers of support.

All the best

Tim
