Dear Colleagues,

At 'Online Information' in London (November) I found that - for the moment at least - the Data Citation Index will only harvest those data references that are already cited in papers in the Web of Knowledge database.

This is somewhat limited because - up to recently - references to data sources have mostly been in the body-text of articles. This is for a good reason: the discussion of data methodology and data characteristics is usually complex.

The Web of Knowledge (and sub-component Web of Science) rely heavily on footnotes/endnotes for citation reports, the H-index and rankings. However most authors follow no formal convention regarding the citation of data (in footnotes or endnotes).

It is not clear how the very important data sources outside of the Thomson Reuters' database will be harvested into the Data Citation Index, and cross-linked to published results. Retro-harvesting of metadata sources is very time-consuming (and very expensive).

Going forward, here's a recommendation for the Open Data Handbook sprint in London on the 15th and 16th of February:

- Scholars should include a prominent footnote on data sources early in their papers (either on the first page - or at first mention of data/methodology).
- Scholars should include a 'bibliography-style' data source-note at the end of their papers.
- These references should include key-terms, such as those used in the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) codes.

Once such a convention is encouraged, the metadata can be mined (eg. by cross-checking with a thesaurus).

If information about data continues to be informally presented in e-WPs, e-Articles and e-Books - then the only alternative way to proceed would be to mine entire papers for key-terms. In other contexts (eg. federated search of publishers' journal platforms) this approach has been unsatisfactory.

There is thus a need for data-source references to be included in pre-defined fields. Although this may sound 'traditional' - its importance has been repeatedly amplified in the electronic realm - where the back-end database is only as good as its metadata and fields.

With best wishes,

Thomas

Hey Jia,

Thanks for this hint - it would be interesting what people will come up with - this sounds like a really relevant topic to our project. Thomson Reuters have the ulterior motive to use some of these ideas and prototypes for the Data Citation Index.

Let's see what the Data Citation
index<http://wokinfo.com/products_tools/multidisciplinary/dci/> would be - it is promised as a collaborative research and data exchange platform, but in a proprietary system...

"Thank you for your request for pricing information for the Data Citation Index. The Data Citation Index is only available through an institutional subscription. Please contact your library or administration to request pricing or trial access on your behalf."
