Actually, it occurs to me that there are bottom-up ways to achieve the
same effect.
In the easiest case, prices are listed on the supermarket websites, and
it's simply a scraping job.
But even aside from that, prices are all recorded on receipts. So what
we would need is:
a) the ability to scan and OCR receipts, and extract prices for product
codes
b) some people willing to anonymously send in their receipts
c) [optional] some mapping between receipt codes and products
I guess mysupermarket already does something along these lines, but they
are in it for their own commercial reasons.
But there must be academic projects that could be conducted on the basis
of shopping price data; it'd be neat if somebody could embark on one,
and get us open(ish) price data as a byproduct.
