Greetings Open Knowledge Education Friends:

Good news! Yesterday U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced
<http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-announces-first-ever-adviser-expand-access-open-digital-resources-schools>
the
hiring of the first ever "Open Education Adviser" to lead a U.S. national
effort to expand OER in K-12 schools. Secretary Duncan made the
announcement during a bus tour stop in Illinois, where he highlighted a
school district’s successful implementation of OER. This video
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqaPWn6QPxM&feature=youtu.be> tells the
story of how the district transitioned to OER. Their success, of course,
builds on other primary education OER wins in Poland

the United Kingdom <http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/44227> and
elsewhere.

This announcement is an exciting milestone for the OER movement, and it’s
one of the most significant steps we’ve seen to date from the Obama
administration. Last month, a broad coalition of more than 100
organizations sent a letter <http://www.oerusa.org/> to the White
House calling for a broad open licensing policy for U.S. federally funded
educational materials. We hope to build on this momentum in the coming
months.

Please help us show the OER community’s appreciation for this announcement
by joining in on social media!
