Hello,

I took a look into the open energy visualisation programme. The first impression was good. The message to the user seems to be rather clear at the first glance. However, there are certain aspects which I have a tendency to believe would further improve the product. Namely,

1. The definitions should be more clear, preferebly in line with official statistics. For example the "Total consumption" should be either "Gross inland consumption" as in Eurostat energy statistics or perhaps "Total domestic supply" which would refer more to the IEA terminology. On the other hand, if the "Total consumption" refers to the final energy use, the term "Final energy consumption" should be applied. The terms may be abstract for a layman, but for a specialist they are necessary to be there. Also for a layman the definitions of the terms used is of great value. This can be realised for example by hovering above the terms.

2. The explanation of the various "balls" should be provided. The symbols in the "balls" for example for coal production are to some extent self-explaining, but perhaps not for everybody. There is a space for the labels in each page when you click the "ball" for a country. Another way to provide the explanations could be realised through hovering.

3. It would be also important to explain whether the production of nuclear power refers to the primary production of nuclear heat or the generation of electricity in nuclear power plants. In Eurostat database the gross inland consumption of nuclear power is equal to the primary production of nuclear heat, but in some international statistics the nuclear power production is treated differently, having the indigenous production of nuclear electricity as a component in the supply side.

4. The symbols for renewable energies were marked in green and the ones for fossile fuels and nuclear power in red. However, nuclear power is a rather CO2 neutral form of energy, characterised often as saving a lot of CO2 emissions because it replaces polluting power generation by fossile fuels. The symbols for nuclear power could be then coloured differently from the fossil fuels, for example with orange rather than red.

5. It could be a good idea to add a "ball" for EU-27, and the corresponding targets (RES share, etc.) on one hand to see where the EU stands in achieving the targets and on the other hand to see how the situation is in individual Member States compared with the EU.

6. The data is shown only for one year at a time. However, the audience is inevitably interested in the evolution in the course of the years. Adding graphs showing the development of the various variables as a funtion of time would be a huge value added.

7. Some data seems to be rather strange. For example the green house gas emissions for some countries seem to be negative! This is probably due to the small space reserved for the balls.

8. The break down of imports and exports by product would be interesting to have.

Best regards

Pekka

Excellent. Great to hear from you Pekka! I didn't see you name on the
subscribers list (perhaps you didn't click the confirmation link?), so
I subscribed your @ec.europa.eu address manually. The latest update
(including a link to the beta) is here:

http://lists.okfn.org/pipermail/open-energy/2011-January/000024.html

Any comments would be very much appreciated! I would be grateful if
you could send these to the list address:

open-energy at lists.okfn.org

Thank you so much for all your assistance!

All the best,

Jonathan
