Thought this announcement might be of interest to Open Heritage people.
Despite the heavy 'commercial interests' language used, in fact this is
merely a call for digitization suppliers' proposals.

Does anyone know of a non-profit digitization supplier who might be
interested in bidding? The deadline is 5th July 2011. I believe it is hoped
that this will be the first consortium tender of many, and it would be good
to see some alternatives emerging to rival the commercial digitization
business models which dominate in this sector in the UK.

There is more detail available on the Archives and Records Association (ARA)
website at http://www.archives.org.uk/si-acalg/news-and-events.html(although
unfortunately the supplier days have already passed).

90 English Archives are coming together in the first national digitization
consortium, to offer up their pre-1914 school registers for digitization.
900 volumes comprising approximately 500,000 images and encompassing over 8
million named individuals will be available and the ARA in partnership with
The National Archives now invite organisations with a commercial interest in
archival digitization to submit proposals. ****

** **

This new approach offers a great opportunity for archives to draw higher
revenues from their rich resources. The chance to increase royalty
opportunities will present archives with new opportunities for investment,
helping them to grow, innovate and become more self-sufficient.****

** **

The project will utilise The National Archives Licensed Internet
Associateship (LIA) programme template, used by TNA for several successful
commercial digitisation projects.****

** **

The ARA together with 90 record offices in 9 English regions make up the new
consortium. Each has identified a regional scanning centre where their
region’s documents can be sent for digitisation. ****

The deadline for proposals is July 5th, 2011. To find out more and register
interest contact associates at nationalarchives.gov.uk or call +44 (0)208 392
