Hello Joris,

This doesn't sound very unusual. An interesting comparison would be to find a case study of mass digitisation funded up front (materials, servers & hosting, maintenance, labour costs, promotion) entirely by crowdfunding.

The only crowdfunding enterprises that "free" content I've come across so far seem very idiosyncratic in their selection of content (e.g.  www.unglue.it) and one gets the impression that central funding is needed to do massive projects.

As others have said, simply ask for the full cost and direct income figures to get a true comparison. There have been some studies on this topic for many years now and the reports of those are to be found on the open Web ;)
