   About this position

This post is a pilot exercise, aiming to learn the best way for
Wikimedia and the Royal Society to collaborate in future. During the pilot,
the Wikimedian will work with the Society to achieve three main objectives.
   1. Improve access to information about scientists from underrepresented
   groups

One of the Society’s objectives is to promote diversity in UK science.
In October 2012 the Society held a successful ‘Women in science’
   edit-a-thon <http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/wikipedia-workshop> in
collaboration with Wikimedia to celebrate Ada Lovelace Day. The event
introduced people to Wikipedia for the first time, made improvements to a
number of key articles and achieved significant media coverage. The
Wikimedian-in-Residence will help to organise further events to improve
information about women in science as well as information about scientists
from other underrepresented groups - such as those who are black or
minority ethnic, disabled or gay. These events would help to address some
of the underrepresentation within Wikimedia and to introduce new editors to
   the encyclopedia.
   2. Open up the Society’s historical collections

The Society curates the world’s most important collections of history of
science material (books, manuscripts, pictures and objects). We are keen to
open these up to the public and to scholars. The Wikimedian-in-Residence
will help to train library staff and users in editing Wikipedia and liaise
with Wikimedians about what information they need from the Society in order
to improve the encyclopaedia. The Wikimedian-in-Residence may also run
editing workshops focussing on particular highlights in the Society’s
collection, with assistance from curators and archivists at the Society.
   3. Improve the quality of scientific articles

The Society’s Fellowship is made up of the most eminent scientists,
engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth. There are
approximately 1,450 Fellows and Foreign Members. In addition the Society
funds hundreds of the most promising early career scientists through our
prestigious grant schemes and hosts over 20 large conferences for
scientists each year. The Wikimedian-in-Residence will run workshops with
Fellows, grant recipients and conference delegates to help them to
contribute to Wikipedia and use it more effectively. This initiative would
help to recruit new editors and to disseminate the principles of Wikipedia
   to influential world-class scientists.
