Dear Joris:
.
Because I advocate copyright reform, I need to be scrupulous about not
infringing copyright.

Social network sharing is far more effective when eye catching images
are used, so I broke my own rule and copied and pasted the last supper
image on the Europeana blog to share on my Pinterest and g+ social
networks. Even though this use is to promote the contest, I am very
uncomfortable doing it, and so this is as far over the copyright line as
I care to step. Although Europeana is wonderfully clear about their
digitized works being in the Public Domain, the image in question shows
DaVinci's work along with its doppelganger which is a modern photograph
and therefore copyrighted content.

It would be a good idea to suggest to Europeana (and anyone else sharing
publicity images) that such images should be clearly licensed for
sharing. (If they are, I couldn't find any evidence of it.) Thanks!

Regards,
Laurel L. Russwurm
