Hi Julien,

could you elaborate a bit more about what kind of public domain movies you
are looking for?

Stuff that's really public domain is very limited and probably of poor
quality measured to current standards, but often the original footage was
of such low quality. The switch from SD to HD is not that long ago and
before SD the quality was even crappier...

But if you consider CC BY and CC BY-SA licensed material useful too, then
do look for CC licensed material on Vimeo. In the advanced search section
you can even select the license and select to only show videos that can be
downloaded. From the Netherlands there's a lot of old material on
http://openbeelden.nl. Don't forget the NASA and ESA sites, they also have
great stuff.
