Daniel,

many thanks for your positive feedback....

The Vienna data catalogue came into beeing by good will and high interest in the topic of open data by
politicians, public administration - and also a lot of talks (awareness building) from/with the community (I
think the process has been strongly community driven) - means: citizens, initiatives (as the OGD Austria - http://www.opendata.at
or open3- http://www.open3.at and the Open Knowledge Forum Austria ) - academic (as Danube University or
KDZ - Center for Research in Public Administration or Joanneum Research) ....and also (very strong here)
the Linked Data Community here in Vienna (we from SWC did really lots of talks here in the last year with
several stakeholders to build awareness on (linked) open government data - also the OGD2011 conference is
organised by SWC and will take place on 16 June 2011 -see: http://www.ogd2011.at).

Furthermore the LOD2 (http://www.lod2.eu) project supported the City of Vienna
in the area of licenses, business models and e.g. URL schema as well as in linked open data
in the course of the LOD2 Publink Services (see: http://lod2.eu/Article/Publink.html)

Then we had a new government in Vienna (SPÖ & the green party) and they put the topic into the new programme of the government...
So the basis work was done...

Then there was a huge amount of work of the responsible civil servants here in Vienna to bring this alive in the last 4-5 weeks...

As I know the next steps will be A) continuous exchange with the community B) open more data sets (hopefully) and C) offer data
in other formats as e.g. RDF/linked data....futhermore A9 a questionnaire and B) a competition later this year....

Hope this short information helps - please do not hesitate to contact me isf any questions are arising...

The license has been a joint discussion between the Austrian cities of Vienna, Linz (that is a open commons City and
working on CC topics very intense), Salzburg and Innsbruck - and as I know this 4 cities agreed on using this licensing
model for open gov data in the future (maybe & hopefully also relevant for the Austrian government ;-)
as we know that the next data catalogue will be opened in Linz oin September 2011....

Would love to write a blog post on this - will contact you beside the mailing list for this...?!

Regards!

Martin

Hey Martin!

this is great news!

I just spend 5 min on the site and all data I found is licensed under CC-BY which is great! Is there a general policy for this? Can you tell us a bit about how the decision on the licensing? Also could you tell us a bit about the over all process it took for this catalogue to launch. I am sure many people did not follow it - as I didn't.

Also: Are you available to write a guest blog post for the okfn blog? So even more people get a chance to know about this.

All the best
Daniel
