Hi Paul,
We did not think about using Freebase, our "role model" is more
OpenStreetMap. I also like the ShareAlike condition of the Open Database
Licence which I believe is not compatible with Freebase. From a
technical point of view, I don't know enough about Freebase to comment
on the pros and cons of using it instead of having a dedicated and
domain-specific database.
We do have an alpha JSON API that is used in our iPhone and Android apps
to retrieve the data for a product.
e.g. http://en.openfoodfacts.org/api/v0/product/737628064502.json (the
number is the barcode of the product)
If you need an API to do something more, we can discuss your specific
needs off the OKFN lists, you can email contact at openfoodfacts.org
Alternatively, you can download the complete database in RDF or in CSV
format.
