I'm definitely in favour, I've attended the last two ESOFs and thought they
were really good. They attract a cross-disciplinary crowd with
representatives from sci comm/publishing/policy/industry etc as well as
researchers. There's usually a lot of early career scientists in particular
because they give a big discount to people under 35. Peter Murray Rust spoke
in 2008 in Barcelona on the topic of open data in science (abstract from
session posted at the end of this email, although it is ridiculously broad!)

Perhaps we could take a look at some exciting things that are being
done/could be done with open data (rather than a general 'why is open good'
discussion), and then examine why it isn't all happening yet. Maybe we could
make this a discussion with the audience as to why they might/might not
consider publishing their data openly? Entirely different suggestions and
further thoughts welcome!

Jenny

PS Fitting into the call:
>From the list of possible formats, I guess the following would be best:
o Workshop: a flexible format, led by a speaker experienced in stimulating
exchanges of views and using practical exercises
or
o Traditional panel discussion: maximum 3-4 speakers (maximum 15 minutes
each) followed by extended discussion with audience

In terms of which theme we would fit into, I think we could argue for

technologies; Is the World Wide Web going to collapse? Nanosensors; Quantum
computation; Nanotechnologies; Ethics data protection and privacy; Risk
assessment; Social sciences; Is e-

ESOF 2008
Sharing scientific data: who benefits?
Saturday 19 July | 16.30 - 18.00
Room 11, Palau de Congressos de Barcelona
Digital datasets — text-based, numeric, audio, video or image-based — form
the output of all scientific disciplines. How is this data being made
available for sharing? What quality control mechanisms are in place? What
kinds of naming conventions, tags, and metadata are in use and how effective
are they at helping to manage open data? Who is storing, archiving and
curating open data and at which levels? And how is the production and
sharing of open data assessed? What processes are in place for crediting
scientists with making their raw data openly accessible for sharing and use?
To what extent can and should data publication replace traditional forms of
publication of research findings?
