The Software Sustainability Institute have launched a petition to ensure
that software is recognised as an important component of research.
The petition doesn't explicitly mention open software but the SSI engage in
many activities that promote open and reproducible research and I know we
have a lot of people who use and develop software extensively as part of
their research on this list so I thought it may be of interest!

Software is fundamental to research - show your support!

Perhaps because software is intangible, we have become accustomed to
focussing on only the hardware that makes research possible. But with very
few exceptions, every significant advance in research over the last thirty
years would have been impossible without software. I would like to see
these advances continue, and that won't happen if the research community
overlooks the role of software.
