Dear all,

I thought to share some ideas i gained from the Geocapacity session at Geospatial World Forum 2014, Geneva and i thank the organisers for providing this opportunity for us for presenting the "GeoForAll" initiative and Open Geospatial Science.

There are three things i think is important when we think of capacity building and the importance of Openness in Education are

1. Empowerment of staff and students
2. Openness in Education for developing creative and open minds in students which is critical for building open innovation
3. Building up Open Knowledge for the benefit of the whole society and for our future generations

I would like to buildup on these discussions and ideas at the Open Science workshop on 2 September 2014 at Nottingham to build up more ideas on the importance of Openness in GeoEducation

This one day workshop “Building up Open Access, Open Education and Open Data for Open Science” is aimed to bring together participants from various disciplines to enable an in-depth dialogue focused on Open Access , Open Data and Open Education for building synergies and collaboration opportunities for Open Science and also with the "Geo for All" http://www.geoforall.org initiative. The workshop will take place in Nottingham, on the 2nd Sep 2014 in parallel to OSGIS 2014 .

The aim of this workshop is also to bring people together in order to discuss ideas on Open Access , Open Data and Open Education for open science. Many datasets have a geographical component, allowing them to be aligned along this theme. Most of the time, just having a geographical alignment does not enable data exchange itself. All the issues that hinder the exchange of non-geographical data are just as relevant to data with a geographic component. In this workshop we extend a broad invitation to all fields to discuss their data exchange issues for data with a geographic component.

There will also be an "RDA for Newcomers session" organised at this workshop. The purpose of the Research Data Alliance https://rd-alliance.org is to accelerate international data-driven innovation and discovery by facilitating research data sharing and exchange, use and re-use, standards harmonization, and discoverability. This will be achieved through the development and adoption of infrastructure, policy, practice, standards, and other deliverables. This session is aimed to welcome and provide opportunity for those who are new to RDA to understand how RDA works and be part of the movement to accelerate international data-driven innovation and discovery by facilitating research data sharing and exchange, use and re-use, standards harmonisation, and discoverability.

Contributions are invited but are not limited to the following topic areas:

- Open access developments
- Policy developments in Open Data
- Global aspects of Open Education
- Open educational resources, open courseware and open online courses
- Application use cases : Government, Health, Energy, Water, Climate change etc for Open Science
- Open architectures
- Open content
- Open science
- Internationalisation and localisation
- Open Source examples in widening Education
- Implementation and deployment case studies in Open data
- Issues on data exchange, data harmonisation

Abstracts (max 1500 words) are be submitted to Suchith.Anand at nottingham.ac.uk before 5.00pm GMT on 30 May 2014.

We are looking forward to get your inputs and ideas for building more research and education collaborations for the future.

Best wishes,

Suchith
