Science is science that anybody can get involved in – gathering field data,
analysing & identifying data, playing problem-solving games, ‘hacking’
together sensor devices to measure and impact your own direct environment,

MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Use Geotag-X to help UNITAR map disasters

Geotag-X <http://www.geotagx.org/> is UNITAR’s web platform to enable
anyone around the world to assist their disaster response efforts by
helping to analyse the massive amounts of data that are produced during a
crisis, which is an overwhelmingly difficult task for a small team, but
easy to share across a large number of volunteers. The GeoTag-X plugin
allows you to help collect photos that are relevant to the disaster and add
them to the pool of photos online.
Challenge 1: Yamuna Monsoon Flooding

The river Yamuna is the lifeline of Delhi’s water supply, but it is dying
from industrial pollution and untreated sewage. It is one of the most
polluted rivers in the world. Citizen-generated images can document the
gravity of the river pollution, its multiple adverse effects on communities
and the urgency for environmental restoration of the river.

with us by Citizens, that can be used together with satellite-generated
images to understand where people are affected by toxic flood water, and
aid flood relief and rescue operations.
Challenge 2: Yemeni Water Usage

UNOSAT is assisting the NGO ACTED in mapping agricultural areas of the
Raymah division of Yemen that have been hit by drought. Much of this work
is done with satellite imagery but UNOSAT is seeking photographs or videos
depicting agricultural areas and practices in or near the Raymah division
of Yemen. This will help ACTED to improve water usage in times of drought.

HACK! Help us hack arctic climate change.

On the shores of the Arctic ocean, climate change is impacting the way that
subsistence communities hunt for food. Rapidly decreasing ice cover makes
hunting perilous and up-to-the-minute information about ice thickness is
becoming a matter of life or death.

We are working with the Yupik and Iñupiat to develop DIY science techniques
which will help their hunters to identify these changes and share their
knowledge quickly, using mobile and sensor technologies. Our hope is that
the technology they develop will make a difference both to their
communities and to our understanding of the effects of climate change.

At our workshop, we will introduce you to some of the same basic methods
for DIY science hacking that we’ll be using in Alaska. We’ll wire up a few
arduino boards with sensors and show you how to share the information they
generate. And we’ll have a few non-science hacks to play with, too.

We’ll introduce you to ScienceMakers <http://www.sciencemakers.net/>, a new
initiative to enable global hacking for science in schools and local
communities — and we’ll be signing people up to help out with our Alaska
project via the web.

We’ll also be showing a movie about our work in Alaska and the communities
we work with. So even if you aren’t interested in hacking, and just want to
find out about our project, there’ll be plenty for you do.
