[open-science] Elsevier are telling "mis-truths" about the extent of paywalled open access

Keep up fighting: The exploitation of sciences by the publishing monopoly cannot be tolerated.
http://www.relx.com/mediacentre/pressreleases/2015/Pages/reed-elsevier-2014-results.aspx
Adjusted operating profit 2015: 1,739£ M or 30.1% that is up from 29% in 2014 – all at the costs of us taxpayers, that is from each tax dollar 30.1% is straight into the Elsevier pocket. Would be better spent in our education and research infrastructure.

Cheers

FYI

I have checked with Dr Arthur Smith from the open access team at Cambridge.

For the University of Cambridge article:

Edmonds, M. 2015. Partitioning of light lithophile elements during basalt eruptions on earth and application to martian shergottites. Earth and Planetary Science Letters 411:142-150. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2014.11.034<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdoi.org%2F10.1016%2Fj.epsl.2014.11.034&data=01%7C01%7Cagosti%40amnh.org%7Cabca3593ff9b42b0c78608d45bf750a2%7Cbe0003e8c6b9496883aeb34586974b76%7C0&sdata=B5etYRnnBuk2bKKqOEBJdwJguh21b4cazzGzRRUVTCw%3D&reserved=0>

The payment to Elsevier of £1,664.45 (€2294.44) was for page & colour figure charges

"In this case, no open access article processing charge was paid. The invoice paid was for page and colour fees, but this was incorrectly recorded as an APC in the spreadsheet."

The other 5 articles still remain potential cases of paywalled hybrid open access.

Best,

Ross

Brilliant Christoph! I mentioned your openapc-de github data only 2 days ago on this list, I just haven't had the time to go through it yet:

Does your data include Ulf's openapc-se data (the Swedish APC data)?

If not we should get that done as soon as possible. There are professional journalists investigating this matter right now.

Hello everybody,

I don't know if you are familiar with the OpenAPC project (https://github.com/OpenAPC/openapc-de<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2FOpenAPC%2Fopenapc-de&data=01%7C01%7Cagosti%40amnh.org%7Cabca3593ff9b42b0c78608d45bf750a2%7Cbe0003e8c6b9496883aeb34586974b76%7C0&sdata=kAIEwdCJEvFVqBD7V%2Fj4XWRgHvAC7vkpDC6Tv7lMwss%3D&reserved=0>).
In a nutshell: We collect APC data from participating institutions, process it and disseminate it as
Open Data.
Ross' blog post gave me an interesting idea: Since we have a lot of articles in our database which
were published (and paid for) as OA in hybrid Elsevier journals (more than 2600), maybe we could
search them for more cases of wrongly paywalled articles?

I ended up putting together a small script to automatically search sciencedirect.com<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsciencedirect.com&data=01%7C01%7Cagosti%40amnh.org%7Cabca3593ff9b42b0c78608d45bf750a2%7Cbe0003e8c6b9496883aeb34586974b76%7C0&sdata=46gWlfRTy8Dh%2F9IIY4cJgRVLF%2B%2FSDkUXVhV%2BPuSduFs%3D&reserved=0> for additional
cases - and we got some results. Details here:
