[Open Design + Hardware] Seeking open hardware projects in medico/health sector

Hi Christian,

I gave a workshop talk at the Things Conference in 2014 on open source hardware and medical devices. The workshop report and slides are available here: https://chimedblog.wordpress.com/2014/05/22/medical-devices-and-open-source-hardware-a-workshop-report-from-thingscon-by-gendor/

I also started my own open-source hardware syringe pump project, eventually to be used as a medical device but currently targeted at the DIYBio sector: http://www.openpump.org (also on Wevolver at https://www.wevolver.com/gerrit.niezen/openpump---an-open-source-hardware-syringe-pump/)

Note that there are a lot of medical/health-related projects that call themselves open source but aren’t, for example I won’t consider the Robohand 3D-printed prosthetics project open source as they only make .stl files available. Very few of the projects mentioned in this 2012 Economist article (http://www.economist.com/node/21556098) are really open source.

I’m currently writing a journal article on medical devices and open-source hardware and hope to have it finished in the next couple of weeks.

Kind regards,
Gerrit NIezen

Dear Open Design & Hardware friends,

I'm speaking at a seminar in Copenhagen in late August that focuses on medical device hacking and open hardware/user driven innovation in the medico/health-sector. Brief event description further below.

I wanted to ping this list to hear if anyone knows of relevant project or cases studies for open hardware in the medicine/hospital/health sectors, or any other relevant input on how open is having an impact in these fields. Like, for instance, the Nightscout/CGM/#WeAreNoWaiting<http://www.healthline.com/health/diabetesmine/innovation/we-are-not-waiting> movement.

Event pitch:
Users are playing an increasingly more important role in the development of medical devices. Some users even take on the development themselves disrupting innovation and development of medical device solutions. This is a delicate situation, balancing on the razor sharp edge between potential lethal risks and significant progress for the benefit of the users (More on event page<http://share.madebydelta.com/klubber/dna-klubben-augustmoede/>).

Thanks,

Christian
