Dear all,

We are currently looking into the structure and activities of the next Open
Economics project and would like to consult with you on the one of the
smaller initiatives we are considering as part of the next phase.

Throughout the project we have been looking at examples of what open data
means for the profession and have seen a need to produce a report which
would give an overview of how much of the primary data economists use is
freely and openly available. This report would serve to identify and give
more information on what is the situation in different areas of economics
research.

Bronwyn wrote a really good summary a few weeks ago about the the data used
in industrial organization and productivity studies. David Newbery has also
provided very useful input on the data used in energy economics. Similar
information about other fields would be also very valuable and could be
part of a report to be shared widely with the community and a good output
of the project.

We would like to consult you on several issues related to such a report:

   - the scope: what should such a report cover and what should it leave
   out?
   - methods and implementation: should we implement e.g. surveys,
   interviews, have contributed expert sections?
   - what is the audience and the users of such a report, would that be
useful and informative for your community?

Thank you for your input and your support for the project.

Best wishes
