That's exactly the one you need (WRT54GL) to put the freifunk.frimware
on it.

Sure, because only then it will do meshing and many other thinks that
are not accessable through the original software.
You can find the firmware here in various languages:

When doing the firmware update, it is very important, that you wait at
least two minutes longer before unplugging or rebooting the accesspoint
than suggested by the original linksys web interface - OTHERWISE THE
LINKSYS WILL BE BRICKED!

You will be save once a reload in your browser shows the new firmware.

After the new firmware is installed there is not too much to change from
the default settings but the WLAN-Settings:

A) a unique IP-Adress

B) the mode: ad-hoc

C) ESSID e.g.:  olsr.freifunk.net

D) BSSID e.g.:  02:CA:FF:EE:BA:BE

E) the channel e.g.: 10

plus the default password ;-).
