Thought this might be interesting.   We (Ile Sans Fil) obtained a
$25,000 contract from a Canadian federal arts program.  The press
release is below and here's some info about the project.

>From the original proposal:
"This collaborative project with terminus1525 would provide us with
the opportunity to:
* further our goal of using our infrastructure to engage local
communities through art and culture.
* expand our infrastructure in Montreal and specifically to add an
ability to promote and share audio content.
* work with other Canadian Community Wireless Networking Groups (CWNs)
and assist them in expanding their infrastructure and abilities to
promote local art and culture.

Problem Statements

*How can we promote young and emerging artists to the wider public?
*How can we expose art to the large segments of society that don't
frequent art or new media websites or galleries?
*How can we use art to foster healthy neighborhoods?

Primary objectives are:
* to introduce art by young Canadian artists to audiences in 4 major
Canadian cities.
* to support community infrastructure that will be managed by local
CWNs and continue to be used in the future (by terminus1525 among
others) to promote and support Canadian artists and cultural
producers.

Secondary goals include:
* to innovate in methods of disseminating cultural content (i.e. locative media)
* to introduce and encourage young Canadian artists to experiment and
explore: a) creating locative art for wireless networks; b) learning
how to create art for different platforms (laptops, PDA's, MP3
players, and eventually, cell phones); c) serialized or syndicated
content.
* to help create a Canadian audience for locative, mobile, and
syndicated artistic content by introducing our users and cities to
these types of content. "

terminus1525, la communauté artistique en ligne du Canada, est fier
d'annoncer un partenariat avec les groupes communautaires d'accès sans
fil Ile Sans Fil et Wireless Toronto, dont l'utilisation technologique
fait connaître du contenu artistique aux publics canadiens dans leurs
cafés, bibliothèques et parcs publics. Les quelques 27 500
utilisateurs d'Ile Sans Fil et de Wireless Toronto sont exposés à
l'art émeargent canadien lorsqu'ils utilisent un des 135 points
d'accès sans fil gratuits et publics, gérés par les deux groupes. La
majorité des points d'accès se trouvent à Montréal et Toronto, mais le
projet offre la possibilité à des bénévoles de déployer des points
d'accès dans leur propre localité.

terminus1525 est fier de soutenir activement ce projet original
d'envergure dont l'objectif est de développer de nouvelles formes de
diffusion d'art canadien. Entretenu par zinc Roe Design,
terminus1525.ca est un espace de travail collaboratif qui a pignon sur
rue dans la communauté et sur le Web grâce à l'ingéniosité et à
l'imagination de jeunes artistes canadiens oeuvrant dans plusieurs
disciplines. Un projet qui a été financé par Patrimoine Canada et géré
par le Conseil des arts du Canada, t1525 offre des studio virtuels
gratuits où les artistes de la relève ont la possibilité d'exposer
leurs œuvres, trouver du soutien, recevoir des commentaires et être
inspirés.

Ile Sans Fil (ISF) et Wireless Toronto (WT) sont des organismes à but
non lucratif composés de bénévoles qui développent, déploient et
entretiennent une infrastructure sans fil issue de, et centrée sur, la
communauté. Ceci est rendu possible avec la distribution d'accès
Internet sans fil gratuit dans les lieux publics, de même que
d'information spécifique au lieu et de contenu culturel à chaque point
d'accès.

À travers cette collaboration, les trois organismes veulent innover
dans les méthodes de diffusion de contenu culturel canadien. Les
œuvres des artistes de t1525 sont exposées à un public large et
captif, composé d'utilisateurs sans fil. Le mandat de t1525 étant de
prime abord proche de celui d'ISF et de WT dans leur soutien de la
communauté à travers la technologie, t1525 a de surplus pour objectif
d'introduire ses membres à la création de contenu mobile, spécifique
au lieu et syndicationnel.

À travers l'infrastructure sans fil issue de la communauté, installée
et entretenue par ISF et WT, les utilisateurs sont dirigés vers une
site Web propre à chaque point d'accès à chaque fois qu'ils surfent le
Web. Cette opportunité est ainsi utilisée pour présenter du contenu ou
de l'information locale, et dans cecas-ci, de l'art qui a vitrine sur
terminus1525. À quelques 30 points d'accès dont le projet a appuyé un
service avancé en audio et vidéo, un mini-serveur permet la diffusion
de larges fichiers de musique et de vidéo produits localement à des
vitesses encore inatteignables sur l'Internet.

L'échelle de ce projet est impressionnante. En regroupant
l'infrastructure et la contribution des bénévoles d'Ile Sans Fil et de
Wireless Toronto, un contenu provenant des jeunes artistes de
terminus1525.ca sera diffusé à plus de 27 500 utilisateurs, dont la
majorité fait usage de cette infrastructure quotidiennement.

terminus1525.ca takes over the city !

terminus1525, Canada's online arts community, is proud to announce a
partnership with community wireless groups Ile Sans Fil and Wireless
Toronto, which uses new technology to engage Canadian audiences with
art in their local cafes, libraries and parks. Ile Sans Fil's and
Wireless Toronto's 27,500 users are being introduced to art by young
Canadians when they use any of the 135 free public wireless hotspots
operated by the two groups. Most of the hotspots are located in
Montreal and Toronto, but the project includes resources for
interested volunteers to set up hotspots in their own cities and
towns.

terminus1525 is proud to support and participate in this
ground-breaking large-scale project, which is developing new methods
to promote Canadian art. Maintained by zinc Roe Design,
terminus1525.ca is a collaborative workspace brought to life by the
ingenuity and imagination of young Canadian artists working in a wide
range of disciplines. A project that has been funded by Canadian
Heritage and administered via Canada Council for the Arts, t1525
operates free online studios where emerging artists can show their
work, find support, feedback and inspiration.

Ile Sans Fil (ISF) and Wireless Toronto (WT) are volunteer-run
non-profit organizations which develop, deploy and support
community-focused wireless infrastructure. This is accomplished
through providing free Internet access in public spaces, as well as
geographically-specific information and cultural content at each hotspot.

Through this collaboration, the three organizations aim to innovate in
methods of disseminating Canadian cultural content. Work by t1525
artists is shown to a large captive audience of mobile wireless users.
Already echoing the mandate of ISF and WT in supporting community via
technology, t1525 also wants to introduce members to the creation of
locative, mobile and syndicated artistic content.

Through the community-owned wireless infrastructure installed and
managed by ISF and WT, users are directed to a website specific for
each hotspot before they can surf the web. This opportunity is used to
showcase local information or content, and in this case, art from
terminus1525. At 30 select hotspots where the project has supported
advanced audio and video service, an on-site mini-server allows the
delivery of location-specific, large files of music and videos at
speeds currently impossible over the internet.

The size of this project is impressive. By harnessing the
infrastructure and contribution of volunteers at Ile Sans Fil and
Wireless Toronto, content from terminus1525.ca young artists will be
disseminated to over 27,500 users, many of whom make daily use of
these infrastructures.
