[wsfii-discuss] wsfii-discuss Digest, Vol 49, Issue 1

We've been running an experimental 6-node freifunk mesh sharing 3
residential broadband connections with 3 Less Networks/WiFiDog public
access points and 2 WEP-encrypted private access points. Not a big
network, but far more reliable than I was expecting. The mesh is always
there. The benefit is that 4 homes get broadband instead of 3 and the
public gets free WiFi provided they accept the terms of use limiting the
liability of the broadband sharer's (if I let you camp in my yard, don't
litter, sabotage, or vandalize my property and don't become a public
nuisance that gets me in trouble).
One thing that I noticed is that a bug in the firmware for the Buffalo
WHR-G54 doesn't actually recognize that it's connected to the
Internet...ie, it meshes with other nodes, but it won't route packets to
the Internet connection it's connected to! Strange. So I use the
Buffalos in places where there is no Internet connection. Instead I use
the Linksys WRT 54GL in nodes where there's an Internet connection.
