...chiming in a bit late. My adding a URL instead of the Email in plain
text is just a personal habit to avoid (more) spam. In general I think
that it would be great to be able to give a URL instead of a mail
address only (+1 to this) Mail addresses have a tendency to rot as soon
as they are published. A URL pointing to a contact page (instead of just
a homepage) also makes maintenance easier. Changing the individual mail
address of a person for each dataset is tedious. If the referenced data
is maintained by an organizaiton rather than an individual it is also
difficult if you only have one contact mail address.
