Hi Elena,

As a first point, I'd like to make it clear that I may be a little biased
toward GN since I'm quite involved in it.

Comparing CKAN and GN on the geographic metadata capabilities is quite unfair:

GN was born as a catalogue for geographic metadata, handling different
standards and profiles, and has been promoted as a reference implementation of
the OGC CSW 2.0.2 standard. It provides all the features needed for a complete
workflow of the geo metadata, from the editing to the publication.

On the other side CKAN has been developed as a dissemination point for any
kind of open data: as such, it deals with geo metadata only as a dissemination
application: you can't edit iso19139 metadata in it, but only view and publish
metadata that have been harvested from an external CSW source.
The CSW service that CKAN offers will only publish metadata that have been
previously harvested from somewhere else.

Pls don't let me wrong about CKAN: I'm only stressing the fact that the focus
of the two catalogs are quite different.

What's great about open source products is the fact you have communities to
discuss (and solve problems) with ;)

   Cheers,
   Emanuele

PS: I guess this thread would fit better in ckan-discuss that -dev.
