This is my current observation, and why I'm seeking usage input. From the
live sites I've been looking at, almost all have it disabled and are using
the google-analytics extension for user tracking, while not implementing
popularity at all. In a couple of cases where I reached out, people were
not aware that it was even an available feature which is something to look
into.

Thank you,
Tyler Kennedy

Note: I'm currently not using the tracking feature.

I would also prefer that approach, assuming that there is a significant
number of installations that use tracking.

That sounds too complicated for my taste. I like the idea of separating the
data collection from its display, but rather than splitting them over
multiple extensions I'd prefer to have a single extension with basic UI
functionality. Users with more specialised needs can then create their own
extensions based on that.

Something to keep in mind: I'm using an external tracker solution (Piwik in
my case) for page analytics. While it doesn't offer the same functionality
as CKAN's tracking there is a significant overlap. A potential redesign of
CKAN's tracking therefore should consider how it relates to such external
solutions.

Florian
