[MyData & Open Data] This man thinks big data and privacy can co-exist, and here's his plan

Hi,

Some personal data can be stored very securely in a Mydex Personal Data Store (http://mydex.org/understand-pds/). Access to these data can then be controlled (to a greater extent). There is no perfectly secure approach to sharing personal data, but the level of security that a Mydex Personal Data Store offers is pretty good. The types of data that are stored in such stores are sort of generic attributes people might have. They are not designed for storing masses of personal photographs or other such data...

I don't work for Mydex, but I am collaborating with some people that do. The basic solution is pretty neat, but quite how this fits with the big data picture I'm not clear...

As for unencrypted data on a computer, once it is on some machine you do not control, then the controller of that machine is able to copy and distribute that data, so if you don't want them to, you have to trust them not to and not to let other users of that machine do so either. I don't want to go into security too much here, but for some encrypted data, we have to think about the longer term too. Is that data as safe in 20 years' time? -almost certainly not...

The idea of self-deleting files is interesting. In some research I am doing I have some data I am to destroy in 6 years' time. I am wondering how best to make sure this is done...

You may have come across the MiData project (https://www.gov.uk/government/policies/providing-better-information-and-protection-for-consumers/supporting-pages/personal-data), which as I understand it was about individuals getting more use and control over the data commercial companies hold about them.

Apologies if this is nothing new or interesting to the list.

HTH

Is this man deluded, or is he onto something?
