Glad to see that our earlier discussions around a possible data privacy
hack has been picked up at Republica 2014, and most of the issues raised
here is on the agenda. Have a think through and see if you want to be
involved and how.

Cheers!

Hello,

(Please fwd this email on to others)

So, this is a first start at formally organising an international
hackathon which will also be a fringe event to OKFest 2014 in Berlin.
(Writing this from Republica 2014 and there is a lot enthusiasm for this
event so far in Berlin)

I am just setting up the basic bits and pieces

Hackerleague page: https://www.hackerleague.org/hackathons/privacy-hack-2014
Web Page with details: http://opennotice.org/privacy-hack-2014/ (still
needs lots of work)
The Rules & Sponsorship: In progress but you can see these at the hacker
league page

If anyone has a theme or topic they would like to see at the hackathon
please let me know. Or join the hacker league and add it.

*A bit of background:*

We (Open Notice Initiative) are helping run, promote and co-ordinate a
series of events this summer on the topic of Data Control, Data
Transparency, My Data, Our Data, Big and yes Open Data. Beyond our own
focus on consent and personal data control, there are a lot of great
projects and people and there is a strong thirst for civic activism.

*Some of the issues*

This international hackathon will still have a core focus on personal data
control and usable transparency over control, although we would like to
broaden this in the context of civic engagement, open data and especially
supporting projects that use laws to help make this happen.

There are a lot of people out there that say people don’t care. There are a
lot of efforts and people out there calling for revolution. It would be
great to see people from both camps engaged in this event and throughout
the OKFestival.

What we really need is a cause people can get behind. We need a cause that
can grow, that is inclusive, that means something to people. This is
something we are brainstorming about and you are welcome to do this as
well.

 So far we have:
- take back the data control,
- withdraw consent
- withdraw consent for the government to use MY Data
- create a hack that helps people to access their own data and share and
express it in a way that is more meaningful.

*What has happen so far*
So far this year we had a Data Privacy Legal Hackathon on February 8, 9th
in London, New York and San Francisco which was a tremendous success. We
had three winning projects and a lot of great efforts. Video’s and projects
can be found here — http://legalhackathon.net/

*The Summer Plan*
The next follow on event is a Mydata Open Data - at the Open Knowledge
Foundation workshop on June 10 & 11 in London, a conference and Legal
Hackathon at MIT Media Labs, 12-16th in Boston and the Privacy Hackathon -
(Data Control & Transparency) in Berlin July 12 & 13th, just before the
Open Knowledge Festival. With a tentative Fringe Hackathon planned for
Mozilla Festival in London in October.

The potential is enormous to really make stuff happen. As the likes of Tim
Berners Lee, Snowden and even Hasselhoff, are calling for a Magna Carta
type revolution, we are wondering what form and in what way can such a
revolution take place.. ?

If you are interested in answering that question and getting involved jump
in any time.

Mark
