i think you raise a key point, the economic one:

the profit margins given the current the cheap market-price of personal data
create economic incentives that are harmful to a free society.

however i believe in a market with information asymmetry biased against the
sellers, their perceived value of their personal data is irrelevant in this
context. just think of all the facebook users.
