Dear all,
Thank you, Marieke, Michelle and everyone from the Open Edu/LinkedUp team
for your great work :)
I'm Rayna and am currently a research fellow at Paris Descartes University,
France, at the Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity. I mainly focus
on the digital part of an innovative project we started implementing just a
few weeks ago in several primary schools in Paris. The project aims at
introducing a methodology we call "learning through research" in these
schools, and for now our target audience is kids aged 9-11yo. More
precisely, PhDs and Master students started developing real research
projects with kids through which children learn what scientific method is,
how to formulate hypotheses, gather data and analyze it prior to validating
or not the initial hypothesis. Projects range from marine biology to
astronomy, and I'm currently working on addressing legal challenges such as
kids releasing data and publishing a research paper written in kidspeak
under permissive licences. A second step of the project is implementing a
monitoring that allows to (at least, qualitatively) gauge what's been
learnt throughout such an approach. For now, the project is at the early
stages, and -- despite numerous challenges ahead, -- it's a lot of fun :)
Website in French is here (English version coming soon):
www.savantures-parisiennes.org
Beforehand, I've been completing a PhD in Genetics and Bioinformatics,
working for Unesco on a project that aimed at addressing extremely low
female participation in FLOSS communities and developing citizen science
platform for synthetic biology. I'm also a board member of OKF France,
founder of its Open & Citizen Science workgroup and always glad to get my
hands on something to hack. Last but not least, I am very much interested
into the potentials of open education and science for development and have
a (big) soft spot for the Middle East and North Africa.
Very glad to be part of this community and looking forward to working with
you all :)
Rayna
