@Michael: here is the record of what might be my great grandfather - can
not see it at the moment for sure though!

As you can see you can pay 40 cents to view, and 50 to view and download.
Although in the terms of use they specify that this scan is for personal
use only, I would guess that if you would publish afterwards your PD
download on Wiki Commons this would not lead immediately to a lot of
trouble, but they officially do not allow it...
I really like the idea of 'donations' rather than paying and I would love
to see an institution experimenting with this. Anybody knows of examples?

I've asked the archivist for some statistics about the amount of money they
get from their image bank and how this is spent. I will keep you posted.
Meanwhile, it would be incredibly interesting to also get metrics from the
Leiden dataset and how this open dataset affected them. @Maarten, you are
working on that right?

I am more and more inclined in putting up a blog post. I will see if I can
get some statistics first.
