SPARQL can be painful both in theory and in practice.

The O'Reilly book on SPARQL is good, as are:

The example queries at the bottom of:

http://vocab.getty.edu/sparql

show starting points. There's a placeholder for the Ontology documents
on the site, so hopefully those will cover this sort of thing.

Downloadable RDF would also be great... :-)
