Hi everyone,

The National Library of New Zealand released its Policy for Use and Reuse today.

You can read the full policy here: http://natlib.govt.nz/about-us/strategy-and-policy/collection-use-and-reuse-policy
And a blog post highlighting some of the key issues and behind the scenes processes here: http://natlib.govt.nz/blog/posts/our-new-use-and-reuse-policy

This is the first public reuse policy to be released by a national institution in NZ, and will likely be adapted for other institutions. The policy allows the Library to move forward with a series of agreed principles, including supporting its donors to CC license their collections, stipulating clear rights statements on out of copyright items and orphaned works, and also upholding the Library's kaitiakitanga responsibilities to Māori. Kaitiakitanga can loosely be translated as 'guardianship' and reflects the Library's legislated responsibility to protect, preserve and make accessible the tāonga (treasures) relating to Māori.

The policy also makes the Library's publically available metadata available under a CC-BY 3.0 license.

Now that the policy is in place, the implementation will begin. The first tranche of work is to release material with no known copyright restriction at an appropriately high resolution.

Any discussion, comment or repsonse to the policy is most welcomed.

Thanks
Thomasin
