[Open-science-nl] Negative Results Week

Dear all, thank you for your very useful and constructive feedback. I am
very sure that with all the support I am getting that this week will
happen. However, I am taking your comments into account and reconsider the
name.

About "negative results": I agree with you that in theory every experiment
or study, when carried out right, will provide new information and
knowledge. If I spend a few months cloning a certain gene from a bacterium
and it turns out that it has nothing to do with a certain behavior of this
bacterium, we increase our understanding of the universe: this gene is just
like the 5000 other genes that have nothing to do with this behavior. Yet
in practice, this is exactly a result that might not make it to the outside
world, although it is useful: I might be saving someone time in the future.

The aim for this week is to make science more open, transparent and
efficient. We need scientists to share more results, other than just shiny
positive stories with a convenient narrative and an impact factor. We now
have a plethora of open platforms and networks for open science, now we
need more people to use them regularly!

I agree with you that "Negative Results" might elicit too much discussion
about the term itself. I am considering the term "Open Science Week"
(although you could argue that it should be Open Science Week year round).
At least this invites scientists to perhaps for the first time share
something on an open science platform. Also, it can be more widely applied
to different fields. I am meeting with the health funds again this Monday
and will discuss this with them.

Thanks Chris for sharing your great video! This is exactly what we need.
But given all the discussion here, you might need to take it again. So I
will update you next week on the meeting with the health funds, before we
start throwing all our energy at it. (Chris it is still very useful,
because I can use it as an example for all the others! You were the first!
Thanks!!)

greetings!
Rosanne
