Inspired by the thread, I made a collaborative text on software (and websites) for scientists:

Feel invited to add more! :)
(And supplement/modify the current ones.)

Especially ones that saved you time and nerve or are "I wish I had started using that earlier".
Adding some meta comments (e.g. links to blog post on using GitHub for science) are welcome as well.

And... least not least, you may discover something that will change your (scientific) life.
