While projects wouldn't typically accept outside mentors who are new to the
project, hopefully members of this list already contribute to one or more
open source projects. If these have been accepted to the Google Summer of
Code program, mentorship opportunities would be available to them.

Promotion to students is a great idea. It's an excellent program both for
the students and for the open source projects. I was a mentor for 3 years
early in the program's life and can vouch for its excellence. It's great
that Google is still running it after all these years.

If we start a little earlier next year, we can promote the program to our
favorite open source projects to get them to apply. It's a lot of work,
but totally worth it.
